Overview

CNBC Shuttle is a live-tracker of the CNBC transportation service. It gives specific information about CNBC shuttles to employees such as where the shuttle is, when it will arrive, and whether it will be delayed. It also gives users the option to directly call the driver and to favorite shuttles.

This was a personal project I did inspired by the frustrations I felt not knowing where my morning shuttle was. I spent 3 weeks to complete the project from the initial ideation to finalizing the prototype for the imaginary app. My role was product designer where I focused on product strategy, user research, interaction, visual design, and prototyping & testing.

The Problem

CNBC employees feel rushed in the mornings because there isn't an app that shows them where the shuttle is in real-time. It's also impossible to know ahead of time if the shuttle will be delayed or not because there isn't an effective communication mode between the user and shuttle driver. This can cause stress and unnecessary wait times.

  1. Not knowing where the shuttle is in real-time
  2. Impossible to know if shuttle will be delayed
  3. No mode of communication between user and driver

The Goal

  • The goal would be to build an app that would show CNBC employees where the CNBC Shuttle is in real-time

Users and audience

I wanted to create a useful CNBC shuttle app prototype that would benefit CNBC employees to ease the stress of their morning commutes. I reached out to some of my CNBC colleagues to conduct user research and created user personas based on the people I talked to.

The Design Process

The first step to creating the CNBC shuttle app was to do some research on other ride-sharing service and transit apps to see how their interfaces help the user see where the car/bus/subway is in real-time. I looked at Uber, Lyft, Transit and Moovit.

Uber > Lyft > Transit > Moovit

I drew out some low-fidelity prototypes for the CNBC Shuttle app to see what the finalized app could look like.

Outcomes and lessons

I tried to make every button and feature on the prototype serve a purpose to solve some of the user's frustrations when they were using the CNBC shuttle system. Some feedback I received was to add how long the shuttle will be delayed which I input in my final design. If I had more time to contribute to this project I would make changes to the UI design by incorporating more whites to balance out the purples. I would also love to hear from CNBC's tech and product design team to see if this app is something they would want to pursue to ease the commutes of employees.
